This point dataset is intended to provide a sub-set of Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) monitoring sites used to designate high quality Tier II streams in the State of Maryland. The sub-set represents those sites without a MBSS baseline station photo.
These data were derived from the geographic coordinate information provided by those conducting the MBSS monitoring, collected using handheld GPS units. Station data was gathered by government, nonprofit, and private organizations by certified individuals following the MBSS protocols developed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The MBSS station location points in this dataset were selected on a segment-by-segment basis. Each segment must contain (1) one benthic macroinvertebrate MBSS sample station and one fish MBSS sample station, with index of biotic integrity (IBI) scores of >4.00 for each station, or (2) multiple benthic macroinvertebrate and fish sample stations, where the arithmetic mean IBI scores for each all benthic macroinvertebrate sample stations is >4.00, the same being true of the fish sample station scores, or (3) a combination of 1 and 2, e.g. one benthic station with multiple fish stations.
Main segment breakpoints were determined using the 100,000:1 National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The final segments are the merged sub segments within the 24,000:1 NHD. Duplicate station data collected from the same station at the same time are not used in this dataset. |
