The campaign is a partnership of more than 70 federal and state agencies, private organizations, businesses and individuals.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>Through an initiative by the US Department of the Interior/Office of Surface Mines, Maryland Department of the Environment/Land and Materials Administration/Mining Program, partnering with the Maryland Environmental Service, developed a mapping applications to distribute information and maps of historic deep coal mines in Maryland.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>This map service displays the areas across Maryland's Allegany and Garrett Counties where historic deep coal mines are known to exist. Used in conjunction with the historic coal mines map service, the historic mines application displays the location of the mines and area below ground where the mines were located. When queried, information about the mine is provided along with a link to the scanned historic mine map. Please note that not all historic mining sites have an associated map.
